Chiang Mai is a city in northern Thailand that offers great natural scenery and an abundance of exciting wildlife. Since it is surrounded by lush greenery and mountains, Chiang Mai is fondly nicknamed as the “Rose of the North”. Since Chiang Mai’s historical centre used to be a walled city, you will be able to find the remaining walls and moat surrounding it.
Since Chiang Mai was once the capital of ancient Lanna Kingdom, elements of Lanna culture and architecture can be found throughout the city’s ancient buildings, especially the ordination hall of Chedi Luang Temple. This temple once houses the Emerald Buddha before the statue moved to Luang Prabang under the order of the king. Though much of the temple was ruined in multiple earthquakes throughout the years, it remains as a place of worship for many and is still frequented by monks.
Another landmark with historical significance is the Three Kings Monument, located at the center of walled city. Legend has it that they are the founder of Chiang Mai and they are also the one who developed and laid out the city of Chiang Mai. They are King Mengrai, King Ramkamhaeng of Sukothai, and King Ngam Muang of Payao.
